If Lunartune's strengths were summed up in five attributes, they would be: musicality, judgement, attention to detail, knowledge of tools, and professionalism. Some thoughts on each of these:
Musicality
This is obviously the biggie as far as composition and production are concerned – a combination of creative talent and solid musical understanding; of "right" and "left" brain if you like. An individual sense of style is one thing, but musical open-mindedness, theoretical knowledge and a broad exposure to different musical traditions all inevitably strengthen a composer or producer's repertoire without compromising this individuality. When creating music for moving image and interactive media, one needs to be original when it is appropriate, but one also needs to be aware of the conventions of screen language and the expectations that accompany any given medium. To paraphrase screen composer Jeff Rona: if a director asks you for the musical equivalent of a hamburger, you don't give them filet mignon, you give them a burger. But it has to be a gourmet burger. "After all, you aren't making up the menu, you just make sure everything tastes as good as possible."
Judgement
When making something from nothing, the possibilities are endless, so any original composition/production is going to be the sum of many thousands of creative choices. And although these choices are personal and judgement is subjective, there is still such a thing as "good" judgement: the ability to make choices that will realise the project vision. It's about knowing the herbs and spices, when to leave them out and when to use them liberally. Pardon the food analogies, but there really are parallels between mixing in the kitchen and mixing in the studio.
Attention to detail
It's important to make sure the little things are taken care of, because they all add up. You can be sure that Lunartune's audio editing, restoration and post-production processes are performed with surgical precision. Whether it's a problematic frequency that needs to be tucked or compressed, a trumpet phrase that needs to be 0.25dB quieter, a reverb that needs 10ms more pre-delay, a cough in a field recording that has to be isolated and removed, a guitar that needs more twang, a loose kick that needs gating, an edit point that needs to be moved to the nearest zero-crossing... Lunartune will tweak it until it's right, because a small oversight could end up being the difference between a quality product and an amateur one.
Knowledge of tools
Time is precious, so a thorough knowledge of the tools of the trade is essential to ensure that maximum efficiency is achieved and the full potential of the technology is realised. It pays to know all available software functions, every last keyboard shortcut and every switch and dial in the rack – that way the client can have full confidence that Lunartune is working smart and that they are spending smart.
Professionalism
Professionalism is about commitment to the client. A big part of this is communication; the ability to communicate ideas with clarity (to musicians and non-musicians alike) is fundamental to the success of any project. Lunartune will offer conceptual input, or step back and take direction from the client as and when required. Furthermore, Lunartune prides itself on its consistent performance, dependability and adherence to project deadlines – because who wants to deal with a company that says one thing but does another?
